The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System is capable of producing enough clean energy to power 140,000 Californian homes!

On February 13, 2014, the world’s largest solar power plant – located near the California-Nevada border in the U.S. – became operational.
Due to regulatory issues and legal tangles, the launch of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System kept being put off. However, the wait – as many discovered – was worth it.
Fully operational, the joint project – by NRG Energy, BrightSource Energy, and Google – is capable of producing 392 megawatts (MW) of solar power – enough electricity to provide 140,000 California homes with clean energy. That’s also enough electricity to avoid 400,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, which is equal to removing 72,000 vehicles off the road!
With 300,000 computer-controlled mirrors (each which are 7 feet high and 10 feet wide), the Ivanpah is the largest solar power plant in the world.
It’s been two years since the project became operational, but the success of the project – and the beauty of its construction – is worth highlighting once again.
