TAMPA — Friends and relatives of a 15-year-old boy they say was beaten by Israeli police are demanding the Tampa teen’s immediate release from house arrest in Israel.

They gathered Monday at the Tampa offices of the Council on American-Islam Relations.

A classmate described Tariq Abu Khdeir as a typical kid who likes playing soccer, basketball and Xbox games. The family insists that Tariq was on the family’s own property when this all happened; he was not roaming the streets, and not looking for trouble with Israeli police forces.

„I am so sad and I miss him so much,“ said Aburrahman Ujaama, Tariq’s classmate.

They say that bottom line, there is simply no excuse for the kind of beating Tariq was subjected to at the hands of Israeli police.

Jewish suspects held in murder of Arab teen

„We will be 100% at ease when he’s here and can get medical attention,“ said Suhad Abu Khdeir, Tariq’s aunt. „I need him to hurry up and come home to seek medical attention.“

Hassan Shibly, an attorney for the family and chief executive director for Council on American-Islamic Relations-Florida, said the family has three goals: for Tariq to be returned immediately to the U.S. to receive proper medical treatment; for the Israeli government to hold the officers accountable; and for peace in the Middle East.

„Violence must stop on all sides,“ said Shibly.

Some people — while not condoning the beating — have raised questions about why Tariq was allowed to get so close to the protests.

Tariq’s family said he and his parents were in Jerusalem to visit family when, Tariq’s cousin, a Palestinian teenager, was kidnapped and burned alive last week — a crime that set off a wave of violent protests in Arab sections of the country.

On Sunday, Israel arrested six Jewish suspects in the slaying.

Palestinians have insisted that the attack was carried out by far-right-wing Israeli nationalists in revenge for the murders of three Israeli teens. Israeli police had said they were exploring all possibilities, from an act by Jewish extremists to a Palestinian honor killing.

Tariq was beaten, family members said, while innocently observing a protest in response to the murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir, 16, whose charred body was discovered in a Jerusalem forest Wednesday morning, standing on the family’s own property.

But in the video of Tariq being beaten, he can be seen wearing a Palestinian scarf, or Keffiyeh.

The red and white checkered fabric is wrapped around his head, and commonly worn by Palestinians during clashes with Israeli forces to conceal their identities.

Tariq’s uncle, Hamdi Swalam, said it doesn’t mean he was involved in anything.

„It’s a sign of Palestinian nationalism. You never know, maybe there was tear gas around and he had to wrap it around his head or put it over his mouth so he won’t smell the tear gas,“ said Swalam.

Tariq’s aunt, Sanah Abu Khdeir, called any notion that Tariq would look for trouble or join in any protest untrue.

„This is a child. He’s an American child, 15 years old,“ she said. „This child should not have to go through this and neither should any child. Israeli, Palestinian. We’re not being political. We’re being human.“

Shibly said Tariq was in custody for six hours without receiving medical attention. A doctor said he needed to see a head specialist, but that did not happen, Shibly said.

Shibly explained that the kind of attack Tariq experienced can cause severe traumatic brain injury. The teen still has bad headaches and his eyes are bloodshot, he said.

Tariq’s father filed a formal criminal complaint Monday against the officers involved and the police department, Shibly said.

His father also met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday.

In a letter to the Israeli Consulate, the Council on American-Islamic Relations demanded Tariq be released immediately so he can seek medical attention in the U.S. and not have to wait through several days of house arrest while the incident is investigated.

Israeli Professor: Rape Hamas Militants‘ Mothers and Sisters to Deter Terrorist Attacks

Mordechai Kedar

An Israeli academic has claimed that raping wives and mothers of Palestinian Hamas militants is the only thing that could deter further terrorist attacks.

The remarks by renowned Middle East scholar Mordechai Kedar of Bar-Ilan University were made three weeks ago after the grim discovery of the bodies of the three kidnapped Israeli teenagers, but the recording was published online (in Hebrew) on Monday.

„The only thing that could deter a suicide bomber is knowing that if caught, his sister or his mother would be raped,“ said Kedar on Israel Radio Bet

„It sounds very bad, but that’s the Middle East,“ he continued. „You have to understand the culture in which we live. The only thing that deters [Hamas leaders] is a threat to the connection between theirheads and their shoulders.“

To the shocked radio presenter who said that „we cannot take such steps, of course“, Kedar replied:

„I’m not talking about what we should or shouldn’t do. I’m talking about the facts. The only thing that deters a suicide bomber is the knowledge that if he pulls the trigger or blows himself up, his sister will be raped. That’s all. That’s the only thing that will bring him back home, in order to preserve his sister’s honor.“

Kedar served for 25 years in the military intelligence, where he specialised in Islamic groups. He is currently a researcher at the right-wing Begin-Sadat Centre for Strategic Studies of Bar Ilan but previously worked for a shadowy organisation, the Israel Academia Monitor, which fights left-leaning academic professors.

Kedar’s words triggered an angered reaction among feminist activists in Israel, who sent a letter to the University president Rabbi Prof. Daniel Hershkowitz in which they condemn Kedar’s „words of incitement that grant legitimacy to Israel Defense Forces soldiers and Israeli civilians to commit rape, and endanger both Israeli and Palestinian women.

„Kedar’s words echo expressions that treat rape as a remedial practice, although it is a war crime.“
